Diamonds are just one of those things that guys do not know a whole lot about. Just like purses and shoes, diamonds tend to be something that women pay a great deal of attention to and that guys seem to not really notice until there is a price tag attached to them.

Just to help the guys out here is a guide of what the different diamond shapes are, what they are called, what they look like, and some other facts on them. This list is not complete but it is complete enough to allow you to have an intelligent conversation with your lady.

So you had a conversation with your lady fair and it got you a one way ticket to a night on the couch. What went wrong? What did you say? Perhaps the problem is that you are not familiar enough with diamond lingo to make her happy. If that is the case then here is a quick list of the majority of the shapes of diamonds that will allow you to not only get off the couch but maybe back into her good graces. Of course a dozen roses never hurt either but try this list of diamond shapes for now.

The most common diamond shape you will see out there is called the round brilliant diamond shape. Nearly 80 percent of the diamonds sold today are this shape and this is the shape you see in most engagement rings. Not only would it be impressive for you to drop the knowledge that the round brilliant cut is the most popular cut out there but it could really help your situation if instead of just commenting that a particular ring has a nice diamond you were to say that it is a nice round brilliant cut diamond you are sure to impress someone.

If your lady has smaller fingers then it may help you to know that the oval cut diamond is always recommended for ladies with narrow fingers. The oval cut sits better on narrow fingers than the round cut and you can still make sure you get her the biggest diamond you can afford. An oval cut can even give the illusion of looking a bit bigger than a round brilliant diamond depending on the ring you put it on and the finger which the ring is placed on as well.

Marquise diamonds are considered to be one of the more elegant cuts available as it was inspired by French royalty. Basically a marquise cut diamond is an oval diamond with pointed ends. This cut of diamond is commonly used when there are other diamonds to offset it and make it stand out more. It is not normally used as a solitaire diamond in a ring or a necklace. It may impress the company you are with if you put out the knowledge that this particular cut as inspired by French royalty but, then again, considering the fate of French royalty that may not be such a great idea.

The last of the common diamond cuts is most often referred to as a pear shaped cut diamond because it looks kind of like a pear with a pointy top. It is also commonly referred to as a tear shaped diamond which is probably aesthetically more accurate of a description. These are rarely found in rings but are much more common in necklaces. Most everyone has seen a tear shaped diamond in a necklace and now you know that tear shaped, or pear shaped, is exactly what that cut of diamond is called.
